Four TUT researchers win the Challenge US: Biometric Measurements from Fetal Ultrasound Images

A team comprising Alessandro Foi, Matteo Maggioni, Antonietta Pepe and Jussi Tohka from the Department of Signal Processing at Tampere University of Technology (TUT) has won a contest held in conjunction with the IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI) 2012.

The contest was titled “Challenge US: Biometric Measurements from Fetal Ultrasound Images”. The challenge consisted of automatically segmenting anatomical structures to measure standard obstetric biometric parameters from 2D fetal ultrasound images taken of fetuses at different gestational ages.

A number of teams took part in the contest, among others, from the University of Oxford, the Russian Academy of Sciences, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne from Switzerland, the City University of Hong Kong, the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca from Romiania, and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization from Australia.

The entry submitted by the researchers from the Department of Signal Processing was titled “Head contour extraction from fetal ultrasound images by difference of Gaussians revolved along elliptical paths”. The fully automatic method is based on fitting an ellipse modelling the head contour of the fetus to ultrasound images and minimizing the cost function with respect to the parameters of the ellipse using a global multiscale and multistart Nelder-Mead algorithm.
