The Filtration Society has granted the prestigious Gold Medal Award to Professor Pekka Ruuskanen from the Pori Campus of Tampere University of Technology (TUT), Pentti Pirkonen, Harri Setälä, Hanna Kyllönen and Juha Sarlin from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Kati Salo and Heikki Tenhu from the University of Helsinki. The award was given out in recognition of their outstanding scientific paper titled “Thermal Stimuli Controlled Functional Filter Cloth for Liquid Filtration”, which was published in FILTRATION (Volume 10, Issue 2, pages 144-152, 2010).

The medal was given out at the opening ceremony of the World Filtration Congress in Graz on 16 April 2012. The Gold Medal is the most prestigious award of the Filtration Society, awarded for the most notable contribution to the proceedings of the Society during a two-year period.

The award-winning paper was based on the results of the Smart Filter research project funded by the Finnish Funding Agency of Technology and Innovation Tekes, Finnish industry and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. The purpose of the project was to develop a filter that is capable of automatically adjusting its pore size based on the temperature of the liquid passing through the filter.
