Biomaterial Research in Tampere well Represented on Tekes Report on Innovations

Tekes has published a report on the Finnish innovation activities. The units of the two Universities in Tampere participating in BioMediTech’s research have been highlighted as key actors in the Finnish medical biomaterial sector.


An important cluster in the biomaterial field has been formed to Tampere during the past decades. The report emphasizes the considerable impact of the Tampere Technical University (TUT) on the development of biomaterial field in Finland. The report refers several times to the spin-off companies derived from TUT, such as Bioretec and Scaffdex.

The SfinPact-report compiled by VTT and Tekes enlightens the history of the Finnish innovation activities and policies. The report is based on the Sfinno database that contains approximately 5,000 Finnish innovations.

The report examines the different roles Tekes has had in the Finnish research and in the developing processes and it also describes the development and innovations of seven thematic areas. According to the report, Tekes has affected significantly to the development of biomaterials in Finland and in Tampere by the funding programs they have offered. Biotechnology is one of the strategic focus areas of Tekes.
