History

The Signal Processing Laboratory at Tampere University of Technology was inaugurated in 1988, when the Computer Systems Laboratory was divided into two laboratories due to excessive growth. The Computer Systems Laboratory for its part was earlier part of the Electronics Laboratory, which was founded in 1967.

Yet another division was established in 2000 when research and teaching on digital systems and VLSI systems design was organized within the Digital and Computer Systems Laboratory. Institute of Signal Processing specialized in the fundamental and applied signal processing algorithms and multimedia.

In 2002 the English name was changed to Department of Signal Processing, to reflect more precisely the scope of the unit.
