Postgraduate studies

These pages exist as a resource for current postgraduate students within the Department of Physics. In particular they detail the courses and learning possibilities suited to postgraduates, and hopefully offer a roadmap towards the 60 credits necessary as part of the formal requirements for obtaining a PhD. For more details on the formal requirements for postgraduate studies please see the university doctoral studies pages.
Postgraduate credits can be obtained via conventional lecture courses, as at the undergraduate level, although more advanced courses aimed at postgraduates are usually offered as well. Students can also obtain credit from more specialized learning events, such as books and workshops. Under special circumstances credit can be obtained from conferences and seminars, but these must be discussed on a case-by-case basis. Examples of the general possibilities are shown on the credits page and there is also a list of example books previously used by the department.
Note that all postgraduate students are strongly encouraged to take part in the course: TUT-9006 "Orientation to Doctoral Studies" (5 credits). This offers an excellent introduction to a research PhD, as well as aiding in the writing of literature reviews and research plans.
