Studies at ORC
As an empirical science, Physics is based on experimental observations and the mathematical models based on them. The validity of the models is constantly evaluated by comparing them to the latest measurements.
ORC develops nanoscale optical technologies and is a bridge between science and industry. The development of new diode lasers, quantum mechanical mirrors and ultrafast photonic crystal fiber lasers are some of our high-profile achievements.
We offer various courses on optoelectronics and surface science with around 150 students attending yearly. The number of people involved in teaching is close to ten.

Studying at TUT
Thinking of coming to study at TUT? Welcome! Hakuinfo (in Finnish only currently) tells you how to apply and what the student life is like.
Applicants for M.Sc. studies can browse our topics of research and publications for an idea of what we do at ORC.
Bachelor's Theses
By conducting your Bachelor's thesis work at ORC you get to the source of physical knowledge and will see first-hand how nature really works in the nanoscale.
We offer a wide variety of topics Bachelor's theses. For examples, see: surface science (pdf, in Finnish) and other topics (pdf, in Finnish).
Doctoral studies
If you are interested in post-graduate studies at ORC, please contact Pekka Savolainen or the professor responsible (see the personnel list) for you chosen topic.
Summer school
We organize a popular international Summer School, New Frontiers in Optical Technologies. It is held biennially, offers students and researchers the opportunity to exchange scientific ideas, create contacts, and gain inspiration from leading professionals at the cutting edge of optical technology.
