After working as a post doc researcher at Texas A&M University from 1997 to 1998, Valden was appointed as the head of the Surface Science Laboratory at TUT. The laboratory, previously part of the Department of Physics, was placed under the Optoelectronics Research Centre in early 2011.

Valden obtained a full professorship at TUT in 2005. Under his leadership, the Surface Science Laboratory has become closely involved in the establishment of the next-generation synchrotron radiation facility MAX IV in Lund, Sweden.

The Väisälä Award was also granted to Professori Xiao Zhong from the University of Jyväskylä.
