ORC student receives international recognition
Postgraduate student Teemu Hakkarainen from the Optoelectronics Research Centre of TUT has received the prize for the best student presentation at the 16th Euro-MBE Workshop, one of the most renowned and prestigious scientific meetings in the field of compound semiconductor technology.
The 16th European Molecular Beam Epitaxy workshop was held on 20-23 March in L’Alpe-d’Huez, France. The meeting has been held biennially since 1981. This year brought together more than 200 participants from 17 countries.
The awarded presentation concerned the epitaxy of quantum nanostructures on pre-determined location. In his work Teemu Hakkarainen used an innovative approach combining MBE and nanoimprint technology techniques studied at ORC. The presentation was recognized for its original approach amongst many other high level presentations by students from leading semiconductor technology groups in Germany, France, Italy and Spain.
Teemu Hakkarainen’s studies are supported by the National Graduate School of Material Physics. The results are part of a sustained effort within the semiconductor technology group of ORC led by Prof. Mircea Guina. The main target of this work is to develop advanced tools enabling the fabrication of new nanophotonics devices, for example nano-waveguides required in photonics integration circuits. The research work has been financed via the Academy of Finland project Dauntless (led by Doc. Mihail Dumitrescu), the Academy of Finland postdoctoral grant 138940 (led by Dr. Andreas Schramm), as well as by the National Graduate School in Nanoscience (PhD student Juha Tommila).
At the same event ORC was chosen as the organizer of the next Euro-MBE Workshop. The conference will be chaired by Prof. Mircea Guina and will take place in Levi during March 2013. This nomination comes as recognition of the broad visibility ORC’s enjoys within the semiconductor technology scientific community.
