Department of Materials Science (DMS) gives instruction in metallic materials, plastics and elastomers, ceramic materials, composites, coatings, fiber materials and paper converting and packaging.

At the moment, almost half of the Finnish experts of materials science and engineering are trained at DMS. Teaching is modern, and the courses are mostly in English. The teaching methods include, in addition to lectures, also web based methods and problem based learning.

Department of Materials Science is the only university in department in Finland that gives instruction in all materials groups. Students can major in MSc level in Fiber and Textile technology, Materials Research, Metallic Materials, Surface Engineering and Ceramics and Technical Polymeric Materials.
Teaching in BSc level is given only in one study module Materials Science. In BSc studies the courses in materials science in together with studies of mathematics, chemistry and phycis give a phenomena level theoretical background in all material groups. This knowledge helps the students to understand the more application oriented studies at MSc level.

About 50% of teaching is given in English. Most of the teaching in BSc level is in Finnish whereas in MSc level most about 65% of the courses are given in English.

Courses given by Department of Materials Science are listed in course catalogue.
