Department of Materials Science - The Materials of the Future

Internationally high-level know-how on all materials based on strong interdisciplinary basic research

The Department is divided into eight operational groups: Materials Science, Materials Characterization, Metals Technology, Ceramic Materials, Surface Engineering, Polymer and Elastomer Technology, Fibre Materials Science, and Paper Converting and Packaging.

Materials Science is responsible for the infrastructure, administration, and teaching at the Department, while the other units concentrate mainly on scientific and applied research in their own areas of expertise. In addition, two special research units have been formed within DMS or in collaboration with other Departments of the University, i.e., Tampere Wear Center and Laser Application Laboratory.

Department of materials science is among the largest departments at TUT and have taught 700 MSc students, 80 licenciates and 50 doctors.

About two-thirds of the total funding and practically all of the research funding of DMS comes from outside the university budget, mainly from the Finnish industry, SHOKs, Tekes, Academy of Finland, and the EU.
