Business information management research

Business information management group's thematic areas of interest can be identified as follows:

  • Managerial practices for analyzing, measuring, and managing Information and knowledge resources. This includes research on intellectual capital, business intelligence, different measures and metrics, and practices on knowledge management.
     
  • The use of ICT for value creation in business information management context. This takes more technology oriented view to information and knowledge management and studies topics such as information systems and their development and use, social media, digital media management, ambient media, and data mining. New value creation models and business models frame in this thematic area.
     

The main contexts, according to the research projects, are welfare, networks, services, and knowledge work.

Examples of research projects:

  • Productivity measurement in public welfare services (2007-2009), lead by prof. Antti Lönnqvist, in collaboration with the dept. of Industrial management at TUT aimed at developing new practices for measuring and managing productivity in a large municipal organization. The results are actively implemented by the City of Helsinki. Currently, the Social Services department (with annual budget on 1 Billion € and 12.000 employees) has 70 % of its activities covered with the new system. In addition, other cities in Finland are testing the practices in their operations. The results were published in a Finnish managerial book.
     
  • A project investigating the impacts of a new policy concerning the services for the homeless (2009-2010), lead by prof. Antti Lönnqvist, evaluated the impacts of a national programme, coordinated by the Finnish Government. The positive results support the spreading of the novel housing policy. The results were published by the Ministry of the Environment.
     
  • OPTEK project, lead by prof. Samuli Pekkola, (2009-2010) aimed at improving IT acquisition at Finnish grammar schools. Within 18 months, it resulted 9 publications and presentations, and had an impact to grammar schools and their IT acquisition practices, and ministries, industries, and the next governmental platform.
     
  • TOP 50 business and competitive intelligence study (biannual since 2001) lead by prof. Mika Hannula explores the current status of business and competitive intelligence functions and operations in the top 50 companies in Finland. The results of these studies have been utilized widely by the Finnish companies developing their business and competitive intelligence activities as well by the service providers operating in this area.
