Research Groups

The research in the Department has been organized into several research groups and focused on the fundamental topics of automation science and technology as follows:

Automation and Information Networks

Hannu Koivisto

Title Professor
Unit Automation Science and Engineering
Room number SD202
Email hannu.koivisto@tut.fi
Phone +358 40 502 1690
Fax +358 4219 198 1189

The key research topics are applied intelligent data analysis and neuro-fuzzy computation, modern telecommunication based remoting technologies in various fields of automation, and systems theoretic approach to supply chain modelling and control. Important recent topic has been participaring research considering information security of industrial automation.

Automation Software

Seppo Kuikka

Automation Software / Seppo Kuikka
Title Professor
Unit Automation Science and Engineering
Room number SD216

Automation is a critical competitive factor in the modern flexible and networked industrial production. A general goal in automation applications is on one hand to distribute intelligence to the controlled devices and on the other hand to integrate production management with the business processes of the company. Software development has become increasingly important in the development of automation systems and applications.

Micro- and Nanosystems

Pasi Kallio

Title Professor
Unit Automation Science and Engineering
Room number SD104
Email pasi.kallio@tut.fi
Phone +358 500 525 546
Fax +358 4219 198 1189
CV Pasi Kallio

Micro- and Nanosystems Research Group develops autonomous systems for manipulating, treating and characterizing micro- and nanoscale targets. We combine knowledge of automation and control engineering with microsystems and nanotechnology to develop novel functional systems e.g. for stem cell studies, point of care diagnostics and paper fibre research.

Process Automation

Matti Vilkko

Title Professor
Unit Automation Science and Engineering
Room number SD306
Email matti.vilkko@tut.fi
Phone +358 40 833 2830
Fax +358 4219 198 1189

The topics of the Process Automation research group are dynamic modeling, simulation, diagnostics, and control design. The tasks of the research projects vary from the dynamic analysis of industrial processes to the design of advanced model based control applications.

Measurement Information

Risto Ritala

Title Professor
Unit Automation Science and Engineering
Room number SH201
Email risto.ritala@tut.fi
Phone +358 40 849 0922
Fax +358 4219 198 1189

The group of Measurement Information studies the relation of measurements to decision making, in particular in industrial production. Selection, preprocessing and analysis methods of data, and decision optimization under dynamics and uncertainty are the key research topics.

Sensor Technology and Biomeasurements

Jukka Lekkala

Title Professor
Unit Automation Science and Engineering
Room number SH217
Email jukka.lekkala@tut.fi
Phone +358 40 849 0931
Fax +358 4219 198 1189

Teaching and research of Sensor Technology and Biomeasurements include modeling and simulation, sensor materials, microfabrication technologies and applications of sensors. The focus of the research is in microsensors, biosensors, biomeasurements, and wireless sensing.

Image Based Measurements

Heimo Ihalainen

Title Laboratory Manager
