2012 best information security thesis award to TUT
Kim Paananen's M.Sc. Thesis "Information security in Smart Grid demonstration environment" has been awarded the best information security thesis award of 2012 in University series by Finnish Information Security Association.The competition is arranged by Finnish Information Security Association (FISA) and intended to support students to achieve good quality theses as well as promote national information security competence.
Critical infrastructure protection is essential in today's information dependant society. The new business models and information usage scenarios can bring new information security related issues into everyday life. Kim Paananen's thesis focuses on analysing the automation environment the critical infrastucture depends on. His major was Automation and Information Networks and the thesis main achievement was check list containing ten critical controls implementable to automation systems. This check list is usable for both industrial partners coming to Smart Grid sector as well as home users evaluating their future home automation reliability.
Theses was supervised by professor Hannu Koivisto and researcher Jari Seppälä from Department of Automation Science and Engineering. The thesis was completed in Cluster for Energy and Environment (CLEEN) SHOK's project consortium Smart Grid and Energy Market (SGEM). The automation security analysis was done in workpackage which was joint effort of professor Sami Repo (Department of Electrical Energy Engineering) and professor Hannu Koivisto (Department of Automation Science and Engineering) and their research groups.
