21.8.2009 - Riikka Rajala's doctoral dissertation
MSc Riikka Rajala defended her doctoral dissertation "Long-Term Development
Paths in Water Services - the Case of Finland)" at TUT.

9.5.2009 - Eija Vinnari's doctoral dissertation
MSc(Econ) + MSc(Eng) Eija Vinnari defended her doctoral dissertation "Public service or public
investment? An assessment of the consequences of New Public Management in the water sector" at
TUT.

2.7.2007 - IHP co-sponsored 5th Conference of the International Water History Association
IHP co-sponsored 5th Conference of the International Water History Association. UNESCO Water

13.-19.6.2007 - The NordForsk Nordic-Baltic Interdisciplinary Research Training Course
The NordForsk Nordic-Baltic Interdisciplinary Research Training Course "Water Governance in
Long-Term Perspectives" (WAGOL) was organised as a post conference activity. The course was
participated by 33 people from 12 countries.

13.-17.6.2007 - IWHA's 5th biennial conference in Tampere
The International Water History Association (IWHA) held its 5th biennial conference in Tampere,
Finland on 13-17 June 2007. The event was co-organized and hosted by University of Tampere,
Department of History and by Tampere University of Technology, Institute of Environmental
Engineering and Biotechnology. The conference was supported by UNESCO IHP programme, NordForsk,
Finnish ministries and several foundations. Mr. Martti Ahtisaari, the former president of the
Republic of Finland, acted as the Patron of the Conference. The conference was a success with
260 delegates from 38 countries. Among others, several of the East African alumni members were
able to participate the conference.

24.-26.5.2007 - TUT's 7th ceremonial conferment of doctoral degrees
Tampere University of Technology held its 7th ceremonial conferment of doctoral degrees where
three CADWES members received their doctor's hats.

16.10.2006 - ICES started operation
The International Center for Research on Environmental Services and Governance (ICES) started
operation. The International Environmental History Group (IEHG) at the University of Tampere,
Dept. of History, and the Capacity Development in Water and Environmental Services (CADWES)
research team at Tampere University of Technology established a joint center - ICES - to promote
international publishing and visibility of multidisciplinary research on water services governance
and management.
November 2005 - Watertime Workshop
The final Watertime Workshop was organised at the University of Greenwich 25 November 2005 the
CADWES team being a partner.

June 2005 - NordForsk Nordic-Baltic Research Training Course
"Viable Water Governance", a NordForsk Nordic-Baltic Research Training Course, was organised
by the CADWES team at Tampere University of Technology (TUT) on 6-11 June. The course was
participated by 35 people from 13 countries.

February 2005 - Signing of the European Declaration for a New Water Culture
Dr. Katko and Mr. Pietilä, as the Scientific Board members, joined the signing of the European
Declaration for a New Water Culture in Madrid, Spain.

April 2004 - The 3rd Watertime Workshop
The 3rd Watertime Workshop "Sustainable and Participative Decision-making in Good Governance
of Water Services" was organised by the CADWES team at Tampere University of Technology. The
workshop had altogether 50 participants from 18 different countries. Oral presentations were
given by 11 invited speakers.

April 2002 - The first PRINWASS project meeting
The first PRINWASS project meeting was held at University of Oxford, 22-23 April 2002 the
CADWES team being a partner.

Dr. Nyangeri from University of Nairobi, Kenya and prof. D.A. Mashauri from University of
Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania were also involved.

June 2001 - Nordic Research Workshop
"Management of water, wastewater and solid waste services in comparative historical and
futures perspective", a Nordic Research Workshop supported by NorFa, was organised at Tampere
University of Technology on 10-12 June 2001. There were 23 participants mainly from the
Nordic and Baltic countries.

November 2009 - MSc Sanna-Leena Rautanen was appointed team Leader of the Rural Village Water Resource Management Project (RVWRMP), Nepal
May 2009 - Dr. Osmo Seppälä was appointed managing director of Finnish Water and Waste Water Works (FIWA)
April 2009 - Adjunct professor Jarmo J. Hukka joined Ramboll Finland.
January 2009 - MSc Sanna-Leena Rautanen joined the Rural Village Water Resource Management Project (RVWRMP) in Nepal as a M&E and HRD Specialist
September 2007 - Adjunct professor Jarmo J. Hukka joined the African Development Bank (AfDB) in Tunis
as Senior Advisor.
August 2007 - LicTech Sirpa Sandelin was appointed principal Lecturer at Satakunta Polytechnic, University of Applied Sciences.
June 2007 - Dr. Osmo Seppälä was appointed managing director of Espoo Water, the second biggest water utility in Finland. Dr Seppälä was the first Finnish water expert with a doctoral degree ever appointed as a water utility manager.
September 2006 - MSc Sanna-Leena Rautanen, a CADWES member and doctoral student, joined the World Bank as Sanitation Advisor.
August 2006 - Dr Harri Mattila was appointed principal Lecturer at Häme Polytechnic, University of Applied Sciences. He can be contacted at: harri.mattila(at)hamk.fi
September 2004 - MSc(Econ), MSc(Eng) Eija Vinnari was appointed to the position of Academy Fellow (ASCademy of Finland) at Tampere University of Technology for the five year period, 1999-2004 Graduate School.
Summer 1999 - Adjunct professor Tapio S. Katko was appointed to the position of Academy Fellow (Academy of Finland) at Tampere University of Technology for the five year period, 1999-2004.
