CADWES - In Brief In 2004, the CADWES Research Team at TUT defined its vision, mission and values as follows: Vision: To become an internationally recognised research group. Mission: To produce usable knowledge, based on trans-disciplinary research on the evolution and development of sustainable use of water services and water resources in the wider institutional context of organisations, management, legislation and policy including formal and informal institutions. Values of CADWES: Global responsibility, Problem orientation, Social effect iveness, Interaction, Trans-disciplinarity, Openness and encouragement, Importance of history and futures, Equity and equality, Innovativeness. Reseach approaches: Based on our motto: "Science to promote water services". Background of the team: In addition to experience from Finland, the CADWES team members have altogether close to 100 person-years of experience from international assignments in developing and transition economies, the nearby areas of Finland, Europe and North America. They have served UN bodies, Finland-supported development cooperation and related projects, development banks, project identification and evaluation as well as education and research activities. The team includes members from Tampere University of Technology, other universities, water and wastewater utilities, consulting engineering companies, environmental and other authorities, etc. The members represent a variety of other sciences besides engineering. Teaching: The CADWES team has for several years organised bi-annual courses in English such as "International Water Policy and Management", "Management Options of Water Services" as well as "Technology Development and Society". The team members have also been involved in implementing international programmes including the Postgraduate Course in Water Supply and Sanitation 1979-1992 tailor-made for East Africa (some 100 MSc students), the tailor-made BSc programme in Civil Engineering for Namibia 1989-92 (15 students) as well as the Water and Environmental Management Programme (WEM) 1992-1998 for the Baltic region (over 100 experts). More recently the team has been developing joint education (NSS programme), research (Academy of Finland) and institutional development (HEI ICI) projects with the Eastern and Southern African alumni. As for Continuing education, the team will conduct the 2nd Professional Development Programme "Water Services Leadership and Development" in 2011-2012 for Finnish experts. In cooperation with the IEHG at University of Tampere, the CADWES team has several times conducted a virtual "Water and Society" course through the National Network for the History of Science and Technology (Torus). Research: Since 1997 altogether seven doctoral dissertations, two licentiate's (pre-doctoral) thesis and over 20 MSc theses have been produced by the CADWES team related to water services development. Doctoral dissertations include also case studies on developing economies and comparisons with other countries. Starting in 1984, and more actively since 1997, CADWES has conducted some 60 research projects worth over 3 million euro. See Approaches and projects. Doctoral studies and research supervision is conducted in cooperation with other universities. CADWES has been as a partner in four EU funded research projects and networks: - PRINWASS - Barriers and Conditions for the Involvement of Private Capital and Enterprise in Water Supply and Sanitation in Latin America and Africa: Seeking Economic, Social, and Environmental Sustainability, 2002-04, FP5. Coordinated by University of Oxford. - WATERTIME - 2002-04, FP5. Coordinated by University of Greenwich, PSIRU. - NETSSAF - Network for the development of Sustainable Approaches for large scale implementation of Sanitation in Africa, FP6. - GOBACIT - Governance, Citizenship, Water Management and Environmental Health in Developing Countries. An interdisciplinary research network. Coordinated by University of Newcastle. The team has held several scientific meetings, five international research training courses, and one international conference. The team has conducted 16 bi-annual research workshops, internal with invited experts. The recent and current research themes cover regionalisation of water services, operational improvements, small systems management, on-site sanitation, pricing, asset management, rehabilitation of aging infrastructure, aging workforce and tacit knowledge management, public-private collaboration, leadership and stewardship, more transparent decision-making, and water in alleviating poverty. Publications: Since 1997 the team members have published some 70 peer reviewed papers, some 30 scientific books including international ones, over 30 national peer review articles as well as tens of experts articles as well as held over 80 international conference presentations. The books have been reviewed by several international journals. Course books: For instance, "Water, Time and European Cities" is used as a course book at least by University of Oxford, University of Alabama, Ochanomizu University, and York University while "Water privatisation revisited - panacea or pancake?" is in use at Northern Arizona University and Polytechnic of Namibia. Social impact: CADWES team members have been awarded six international and eleven national awards or recognitions. The team has also actively published its findings in expert magazines and newspapers. Professional associations: CADWES members are active in several international professional associations: International Water Association (IWA) and its specialised groups, International Water History Association (IWHA) and its executive council 2006-09, 09-, American Water Works Association (AWWA), International Water Resources Association (IWRA): In Finland the members are actively involved in the Finnish Associat ion of Civil Engineers (RIL), The Finnish Association for Nature Conservation, The Finnish Association of Non-fiction Writers, The Finnish Society for Futures Studies, The Finnish Society for the History of Technology, Global Dry Toilet Association of Finland, Water Association Finland as well as some NGOs (Friends of Earth, Nature league, WaterFinns). Team members have conducted invited presentations at the Annual Seminars of the Finnish Water and Waste Water Works Association as well as those connected to World Water Day. Since 2002 the team has presented TUT in UniPID (Finnish Universities' Partnership for International Development) and its governing board with the aim of promoting university involvement in international development cooperation. In 2001 the team carried out a project that recommended the establishment of the Finnish Water Forum which was launched in 2009. Other network: The team is part of the Waterlat network in Latin America. In 2006 the International Centre for Research on Environmental Services and Governance (ICES) was established in cooperation with CADWES and the International Environmental History Group (IEHG) at the University of Tampere. There is also cooperation with several Universities of Applied Sciences in Finland. There are also several inter- and multidisciplinary networks like GlobeNet operating in the Tampere region in which the team participates. Career development: Experts involved in the team have done well in their professional and academic careers both nationally and internationally.
