Master's Degree Programme in Materials Science
World of materials
The importance of materials science has significantly increased as a result of rapid technological developments during the past few years. Modern materials science deals with scientific and engineering problems in a wide range of disciplines and studies material properties and behaviour from the nanoscale up to macroscopic structures and buildings. Materials engineering is applied science with a crucial role in the development of other engineering fields. As a result, the need for well educated materials scientists and engineers is rapidly growing.
The cornerstone of materials engineering is extensive knowledge of fundamental natural sciences - physics, chemistry, mathematics and different fields of engineering. The programme familiarizes students with topics ranging from atomic structures to the properties of materials and their underlying mechanisms.
Are you looking for a university where the curriculum covers all kinds of materials and a department that trains almost half of the Finnish experts of materials science and engineering?
The programme offers students the latest knowledge in materials science and trains multidisciplinary experts, managers, R&D engineers, and scientists who have the skills to work effectively in Finnish and international companies and academia.
Inspiring student life
Materials Science students are sociable and actively involved in student activities. TUT offers excellent facilities for sports, but different clubs and student organizations also help you make the most of student life and find friends and contacts from all over the world.
MIK is the guild for all the Finnish and international students of materials engineering at TUT. The guild organizes a broad range of events and activities related to studies and free time. Whether you want to have a relaxing cup of coffee in the guild room with your fellow students, study together, visit companies or do sports, the guild helps you to get in touch with other students.
Versatile career prospects
Gradautes from the Degree Programme in Materials Science typically pursue an academic career as scientists working towards their PhD degrees or find employment as materials professionals in Finnish or international industry. The Finnish industry offers a wide variety of potential careers ranging from modern steel industry to the production of electronic components, such as mobile phones and semiconductor devices. A strong background in materials science combined with a selection of minor subjects helps you start the career you are most interested in.
The focus area of Fibre, Textile and Fashion Engineering gives students a thorough insight into the textile and fashion industry and tools to work in managerial positions in the international textile and fashion value chain. Students acquire the skills to work in the sourcing, production and merchandising departments of clothing companies. They understand the role that textile and clothing industry plays in the global economy and the principles of corporate social responsibility. They learn the critical success factors and success measures of fashion sourcing and retailing. Finally, students acquire in-depth knowledge of different types of textile fibres and high-performance textiles.
