Master's Degree Programme in Materials Science

World of materials

The importance of materials science has significantly increased as a result of rapid technological developments during the past few years. Modern materials science deals with scientific and engineering problems in a wide range of disciplines, and studies material properties and behaviour from the nanoscale up to macroscopic structures and buildings. Consequently, the need for well educated materials scientists and engineers is rapidly growing.

The International Master's Degree Programme in Materials Science offers multidisciplinary and flexible study opportunities of a high standard and quality. It operates in an internationally-oriented and innovative study and research environment, preparing the students for flexible professional and academic career opportunities both in Finland and abroad. The completion of the Masters Program including the Master's thesis takes usually 2 to 3 years. The programme is entirely in English and leads to the degree of Master of Science (Technology). Completion of the programme qualifies the student to apply for doctoral degree studies.

Inspiring student life

Materials Science students are sociable and actively involved in student activities. TUT offers excellent facilities for sports, but different clubs and student organizations also help you make the most of student life and find  friends and contacts from all over the world.

MIK is the guild for all the Finnish and international students of materials engineering at TUT. The guild organizes a broad range of events and activities related to studies and free time. Whether you want to have a relaxing cup of coffee in the guild room with your fellow students, study together, visit companies or do sports, the guild helps you to get in touch with other students.

Career prospects

The students graduating from the Degree Programme in Materials Science pursue their careers typically within the academia as scientists working towards their PhD degrees, or in the Finnish or international industry as various materials experts. The Finnish industry offers a wide variety of potential careers ranging from modern steel industry and design and production of heavy machinery to production and design of electronic components such as mobile phones and semiconductor devices. In the industry the strong background in materials science combined with suitable selection of minor subjects helps you to find the career you are most interested in.
