Curriculum structure

The extent of the International Master's Degree Programme in Electrical Engineering is 120 credits, of which 90 credits is composed of course work and the remaining 30 credits comprise the master's thesis. One credit is equivalent to an average workload of 27 hours, which may include activities such as lectures, exercises, lab work, assignments and a final examination.

The degree programme comprises the following study modules:

Common studies

Common studies aim to offer the student a common grounding. The purpose is to ensure all students have the essential concepts in the programme. Mandatory courses are determined by the student's major subject:

  • Radio Frequency Electronics: Background for Electromagnetic Systems; RF-Electronics Preparatory II.
  • Wireless Communication Circuits and Systems: Basic Course on Wireless Communications; Communication Circuits & Modules I.
  • Smart Grids: Fundamentals of Electrical and Power Engineering; Introduction to Renewable Energy Sources.

Common studies may consist also, for example, the basics of Finnish language and the essential oral skills to participate in scientific debate.

Major studies

The applicant chooses one of three focus areas or major subjects: Radio Frequency Electronics; Wireless Communication Circuits and Systems; or Smart Grids. More detailed information about the content of majors studies can be found under Focus Area. The master's thesis is written on a topic connected to the major.

Minor studies

In addition, students complement their degree by choosing minor subject(s) that best suit their professional and personal interests. Among other things possible minors can be: Biomedical Engineering, RF ASIC Design, Signal Processing and Digital and Computer Electronics. Minor can also be from the themes of major subjects.

Optional studies

In optional studies students can freely select the courses depending on their personal interests. Courses may be, for example, additional major or minor subject studies, language courses or management courses.

Master's thesis

Master's thesis is an independent scientific work written on a topic connected to the student's major studies.

A word about teaching and learning

The programme is implemented using student-centred teaching methods. This approach has shown to give students better insight into the importance of the relevant theories and their practical implications. The teaching methods include lectures, group work, independent reading, tutorials, assignments, hands-on laboratory experiments, and the master's thesis. The lecturers in this programme are all acknowledged experts in their respective fields who have ample experience of both industry and academic research. The departments contributing to the courses included in the programme have well-established partnerships with local and global businesses.
