Doctoral Studies

Tampere University of Technology (TUT) offers postgraduate students a high-standard, inspiring research environment and services for the commercialisation of research results. Doctoral studies provide students with the opportunity to deepen and apply their acquired scientific knowledge and skills.

The following doctoral degrees can be taken at TUT:

  • Doctor of Science (Technology)
  • Doctor of Science (Architecture)
  • Doctor of Philosophy

The Finnish Doctor of Science degree is equivalent to a PhD in many other countries.

To pursue the degree of Doctor of Science in Technology or Doctor of Science in Architecture, the applicant must hold a master's degree in a technical-scientific field (technology, architecture) or a comparable Finnish or international degree that can be certified to provide sufficient knowledge and fulfill the prerequisites.

Persons who hold a higher degree from a Polytechnic or University of Applied Sciences (Ammattikorkeakoulu, Fachhochschule) are not eligible to apply for doctoral studies at TUT.

Doctoral studies can be conducted alongside work or on a full-time basis. Full-time studies take place within the framework of a graduate school, either one of the University's own graduate schools or those funded by the Ministry of Education.

Many postgraduate students at TUT have flexibly combined their work with doctoral studies by conducting research related to their work. Employers often encourage their employees to continue their studies as far as a doctoral degree, as research conducted by an employee provides the company with the latest possible knowledge and perhaps even new products, production methods or improved systems.
