Language requirements

The language of instruction in the international master's degree programmes at TUT is English. A good command of English is an absolute prerequisite for applying to the programmes.

All international students applying to the master's degree programmes offered in English must demonstrate their proficiency in English with an internationally recognised academic language test report (for more information please see the section Language test below).

Applicants may be exempted from the requirement to submit a certificate of language proficiency, if they are able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language in one of the following ways.

1) The applicant is a citizen of one of the following countries: UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.

2) The applicant has completed a degree taught in English at a university located in an EU/EEA member state. The applicant must have physically resided in the country while studying.

3) The applicant has completed a degree taught in English at a university located in the UK, Ireland, the USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. The applicant must have physically resided in the country while studying.

4) The applicant has spent an exchange period at Tampere University of Technology or some other Finnish university. During the exchange period, the applicant must have completed at least 15 credits worth of courses conducted in English with a GPA of at least 3/5.
- Please note that students who have spent their exchange study period at a university of applied sciences must must demonstrate their proficiency in English with a language test.


Language tests

TUT accepts internationally recognised academic language tests as demonstration of language proficiency. The accepted tests are IELTS Academic, TOEFL, PTE Academic and CAE/CPE.

IELTS Academic

Tampere University of Technology verifies all IELTS test results from the test organiser. Please send a paper copy of the IELTS score slip along with the application. Please indicate your test score, test date and the IELTS test report number on the application form.

TOEFL

When registering for the TOEFL, please enter the code of Tampere University of Technology 0599 into the Score Report Recipient field. TUT verifies all TOEFL test results online from the test organiser. Please indicate your test score and test date on the application form.

Applicants who have already taken the TOEFL test will need to request the test organiser to make the test score available online for TUT.

PTE Academic

Your online PTE Academic account allows you to send a secure copy of your test scores to Tampere University of Technology online. TUT will then be able to access and verify your test result online. Please indicate your test score and test date on the application form.

Cambridge Language Certificate (Proficiency CPE or Advanced CAE)

Send your test results to Tampere University of Technology enclosed with your application. Your results will be verified from the test organiser. Include your Candidate's ID and secret code.

Studies in Finnish?

International applicants who wish to study in Finnish but have not completed a school or a university degree in Finnish must provide a certificate of their proficiency in the Finnish language. Unfortunately TUT cannot offer any preparatory language courses for applicants.
